Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Linux-on-Palm (But Were Afraid To Ask)

Linux4Palm

You have found Hack&Dev already. However, you do not know how to use search button in the upper right corner of the main page (do you ?). Still, you want instructions and step-by-step guide to Penguin. Here is our collective gift - first check Latest Releases, then follow the links below to find How-to for your specific model. If you still have questions, follow links to specific model forum thread and ask people there. However, remember - search forum first, maybe answer to your question is already there.

Unstable Builds

Linux4Palm

I've started updating the unstable builds at http://builds.hackndev.com/. These images are automatically generated and untested but they do contain the latest code and features. For example, the Treo 650 images include working sleep, GSM modem partially working (have phone on before booting linux and try libgsmd-tool; mokodialer usually crashes atm), sound (turn up the volume with alsamixer) and USB ethernet. Currently only images for the machines ld, t650, tt3, tt5, tx and z72 are being built, I'll try to add others when I have time.

Cocoboot version 0.4

Linux4Palm

Get it while it's hot. The reason for this rapid release is twofold. Firstly, 0.3 broke on the LD, TX and maybe other machines, so if you were getting an error like "Returned c01d", then 0.4 should fix it for you. Secondly, I implemented a couple new and nifty features that were requested. Cocoboot now reads a configuration file "cocoboot.conf" (see example) letting you configure the default command-line, name of zImage and initrd etc. You can also now turn on "no prompt mode" which means Cocoboot will start Linux without asking you any questions as soon as you tap its icon. Have fun!

Cocoboot v0.3 released

Linux4Palm

Cocoboot version 0.3 adds a USB console for development work and includes several small fixes to make things more reliable and allow booting bigger kernels. This release is also the first to integrate Treo and Zire31 support into the official version of Cocoboot. Thanks go to phire and slapin for testing and suggestions. Please let me know if you have any trouble with this version as it has only been tested on a couple of devices. Beware: The kernel command line is now empty by default, check to ma

How to test Linux4Palm in qemu

Linux4Palm

We've had the capability to boot the Hack&Dev kernel inside qemu for a while now and I'd been meaning to write up some instructions. Well, better late then never. As part of my evil scheme to populate Planet Hack&Dev with some content, I've put together a short howto demonstrating how easy it is to run a Hack&Dev kernel with a random rootfs on your desktop PC.

Update: I decided to make a proper release as we might do something drastic to the code. Windows binaries are available too!

FishEye on SVN

Linux4Palm

Thanks to Cenqua and Contegix we've got a free FishEye for our svn tree. You can reach it by "SVN repository" link (http://fisheye3.cenqua.com/browse/hackndev/).
